About Us

A FOCUS ON PREVENTION

Family Promise  is the nation’s leading organization working to prevent and end family homelessness.

Ending homelessness means investing in homelessness prevention – that is, stopping people from becoming homeless to begin with. This involves a change in the way we think about homelessness. Rather than managing the problem through emergency services, such as soup kitchens and shelters, it makes more sense to intervene before the loss of housing occurs, or if someone does experience homelessness, to get them stably housed as quickly as possible.

PREVENTION MATTERS

Episodes of homelessness have a direct, measurable impact on our children. Children who experience homelessness are:

More than 40% of Americans are a $400 expense away from financial distress.

The threat of crisis looms too closely for many families. Preventing families from spiraling into homelessness is an essential aspect of the Family Promise mission.

NEED HELP?

Family Promise of Birmingham is one of only TWO shelters in North Central Alabama that serves families consisting of:

  • Husbands and wives with children

  • Men with children

  • Women with children - one must be a male child 10 years or older

  • Guardians with Children

Families must be capable of participating in a family environment supervised by volunteers. There is absolutely no fee for services. All adults must pass a thorough criminal background screening, as well as a drug test. Other criteria include:

  • No untreated mental health issues

  • No active domestic violence

  • Interviews and intakes are completed Monday-Friday from 7:30 am until 2:00 pm by appointment only. We are not an emergency shelter - meaning families do not move in the same day as inquiry phone call.

To make a referral, complete a phone interview, or for more information, please call Rana Cowan at 205-918-0246, or email director@familypromisebham.org
